The Felmyst server, a private World of Warcraft server developed by fans WoTLK Gold, and designed to imitate Blizzard's MMO which was launched in 2007 when the Burning Crusade expansion launched, was closed. The server was launched on July 21 however it was shut down several hours later.
Gummy52 who is a developer on the project, has posted an image of the cease-and-desist message from Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP the legal firm that represents World of Warcraft developer Blizzard. The letter stated that the server is an infringement of Blizzard's intellectual properties.
"We recognize that as a result of your participation with Felmyst that you are involved on the design, development, and hosting for 'emulated server software (hereafter"Infringing services")," ),'" the letter states. "Among other things, [these] Infringing Services allow users to play altered and/or illegitimate copies of WoW online [without] the need for a legitimately-purchased copy or subscription."
ArsTechnica has further details on the letter which continues to clarify that "Blizzard has never authorized and, in reality, specifically prohibits any activity that is not permitted."
